During the annual Diocesan Oratorical Contest, students from many schools and academies deliver a famous speech of their choosing. The contest provides a unique opportunity to foster the development of poise and confidence in students, and is a medium to enhance the essential life skill of public speaking.

The Diocesan Oratorical Contest was held on May 20, 2015 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Academy. The Office of the Superintendent ~ Catholic School Support Services would also like to recognize the other finalists:

Carmela Agosta, Grade 8, Our Lady of Hope School
“I Have A Dream” delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Anna Dilena, Grade 7, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Academy
“If I Should Have A Daughter” delivered by Sarah Kay

Natalia Kyriakopoulos, Grade 8, Saint Francis of Assisi School
“Back To School Address” delivered by President Barack Obama

The Office of the Superintendent ~ Catholic School Support Services is very grateful for the help and support of the teachers from each participating school that accompanied their students and served as judges in the preliminary rounds.

Special thanks to the final round judges: Ms. Mary Scheer, Principal of Holy Family School; Mrs. Barbara Kingston, Teacher at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Academy in Queens; and Mr. Anthony Biscione, Senior Deputy Superintendent.

The Oratorical Contest would not be possible without the organizational efforts of Sister Peggie Merritt, OP and Mrs. Cathy Kenny, Coordinator of Special Projects for Curriculum and Evaluation.

Many thanks to the administration of our host school: Mrs. Linda Dougherty, Principal, and the faculty and students who assisted our contestants, guests and judges throughout the contest as greeters, guides and timers.
