“May the Church be a place of God’s mercy and hope, where all feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live according to the good life of the Gospel. And to make others feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged, the Church must be with doors wide open so that all may enter. And we must go out through these doors and proclaim the Gospel.”
– Pope Francis during a General Audience on June 12, 2013

Parishes are where the Church lives; the home of the Christian community. Parishes are communities of faith, of action and of hope, where the gospel is proclaimed and celebrated.

The Diocese also comprises two diocesan cathedrals: the Cathedral Basilica of St. James in Downtown Brooklyn, the oldest Catholic parish on Long Island established in 1822; and the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph in Prospect Heights, consecrated on May 13, 2014 by the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio.

These dedicated parishes reflect the multicultural and unique foundation of the Diocese, offering Masses in 26 different languages. Additionally, the 28 Ethnic Apostolates of the Diocese have been called to unite immigrants groups, providing them with opportunities to belong to the larger community while preserving and sharing their culture and uniqueness.
