Futures In Education Raises Over $2 Million Benefitting Impoverished Students Of Brooklyn And Queens

On Thursday, October 15th, Futures in Education, the scholarship fund of the Diocese of Brooklyn, hosted its annual Scholarship Fund Dinner at the Grand Ballroom of The Waldorf Astoria New York in Manhattan. The event raised an overall of $2.3 million in scholarships for the deserving students of low-income families of Brooklyn and Queens to attend Catholic elementary schools and academies, overpassing the record set last year of $2.2 million.

“When you save one soul, you save the whole world. This is the same, we are working one child at a time. Thanks to God we are able to help nearly 6,000 deserving students with scholarships to stay in our schools,” said the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, during the event. BROOKLYN DIOCESE WELCOMES POPE FRANCIS WITH LARGEST PAINTED BILLBOARD IN NYC

DeSales Media Group, the communications and technology arm of the Diocese of Brooklyn, will welcome Pope Francis to the New York metropolitan area with a 225-foot tall billboard in the middle of the Big Apple.

Earlier this week, from sunrise to sunset, a team started hand painting a welcoming message at one of New York’s busiest intersections, the corner of Eighth Avenue and 34th Street in Manhattan. The corner is conveniently located outside Pennsylvania Station and the iconic Madison Square Garden arena, which will host the Holy Father’s September 25th Mass. The billboard will generate more than 700,000 impressions each week and will be visible throughout September.

TWO PRIESTS TO BE ORDAINED BISHOPS FOR THE DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN

On Monday, July 20th, at 2 p.m., the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, will ordain two new bishops for the Church in Brooklyn and Queens at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph, 856 Pacific Street, Prospect Heights. Pope Francis appointed the Very Reverend James Massa, 54, and the Reverend Canon Witold Mroziewski, 49, as auxiliary bishops of Brooklyn in May.

Co-consecrating bishops will be the Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre, and the Most Reverend Raymond Chappetto, Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn and Vicar General for the Diocese. They will be joined by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States; His Eminence Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York; His Eminence Theodore Cardinal McCarrick, Archbishop-Emeritus of Washington, D.C.; His Excellency Bernardito Auza, Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See Mission to the United Nations; His Excellency Charles Chaput, Archbishop of Philadelphia; in addition to over 28 archbishops and bishops from across the United States and the world, including Bishop Artur Mizinski, Secretary General of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, and Archbishop-Emeritus Juliusz Paetz of the Archdiocese of Poznan.

BISHOP DIMARZIO ORDAINED 10 NEW PRIESTS FOR BROOKLYN AND QUEENS

On Saturday, June 27, 2015, the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, ordained ten men to the priesthood for the Diocese of Brooklyn at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph, Prospect Heights.

“You come to us from individual different backgrounds, from different ethnicities and cultures, from different families. You mirror clearly today what is the Diocese of Brooklyn,” said Bishop DiMarzio to the new priests during the ordination homily. “So today we recognize that all of us come with one language, the language of the Holy Spirit.”

Statement of Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio on the Murder of Worshipers at AME Church, in Charleston

Last week we were all stunned to learn of the murder of worshipers at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. My prayers and that of the entire Catholic Community in Brooklyn and Queens are with the Emanuel AME community and the people of South Carolina. As worshipers returned to Mass on Sunday, there is no doubt it was difficult to pray and worship among grief and anger. But they have shown the world how faith can overcome even the most evil act. Join me in prayer and solidarity for the Emanuel AME community.

In light of the Haitian deportations in the Dominican Republic

WHAT:  Mass of Solidarity and Unity in light of the deportations in the Dominican Republic; with a special invitation to the Haitian and Dominican communities.

WHY: In light of the beginning of deportations of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic, some born there, Bishop DiMarzio has called together the Dominican and Haitian communities in a Mass of Peace and Solidarity with those being deported. “We will pray for a change of heart on the part of the Dominican government in this humanitarian crisis,” said Bishop DiMarzio.

POLICE OFFICER BRIAN MOORE TO BE HONORED WITH THE DEDICATION OF A LIVING MEMORIAL AT THE ANNUAL GREGORIAN FESTIVAL IN BELLEROSE

After the tragic death of NYPD officer Brian Moore, 14 Catholic schools and academies within the Diocese of Brooklyn teamed up with the 105th Precinct to raise funds and build a Memorial Garden in his honor.

The garden dedication ceremony, street naming, and 105th precinct presentation will take place on Saturday, June 20th, from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. at Saint Gregory the Great School, 244-44 87th Avenue in Bellerose, New York. The ceremony was planned in conjunction with the 36th Annual Gregorian Summer Festival run by Saint Gregory the Great parish and school.

“Our festival runs for eleven nights, and this is a very large area so security is a major concern. Police Officer Moore was a frequent contributor towards the security effort here, and he was well known to the people of our community,” said Msgr. Edward Ryan, pastor at Saint Gregory the Great.
