On Wednesday, February 10th, hundreds of Catholics will come to Brooklyn’s historic Cathedral Basilica of St. James in observance of Ash Wednesday.

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, will bless ashes and mark the foreheads of congregants as he celebrates a noon Mass at 250 Cathedral Place, Downtown Brooklyn.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40 day Christian observance in the liturgical year that ends with the celebration of the Sacred Triduum, the three holiest days of the year–HolyThursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil–which lead to Easter Sunday.

As is customary, the ashes to be used on Ash Wednesday will come from the burning of the blessed branches used on Palm Sunday of the previous year. Palm Sunday, also known as PassionSunday, is the Sunday before Easter that commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. It also marks the beginning of Holy Week. This year, Easter Sunday will be celebrated on March 27.

On Wednesday, December 16th, at 4:00 p.m., the Diocese of Brooklyn will light a Christmas tree and bless a Nativity scene at Grand Army Plaza in Prospect Park, as part of the celebrations for the Holy Season of Christmas.

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, will bless the crèche right by the triumphal arch at the main entrance of the park. “As we gather to bless this Nativity scene, we are reminded to keep Christ in Christmas as we prepare for the birth of Jesus Christ into the history of our world. It is an opportunity to bring hope and peace to our tolerant city, as we teach the new generations love and compassion through diverse traditions,” said Bishop DiMarzio.

La Diócesis de Brooklyn celebrará el Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe este sábado, 12 de diciembre, a partir del mediodía en la Concatedral de San José, 856 Pacific Street, Prospect Heights.

On Saturday, December 12th, the Diocese of Brooklyn will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe starting at noon at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph, 856 Pacific Street, Prospect Heights.

Holy Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, and concelebrated by Auxiliary Bishops James Massa and Octavio Cisneros, who will preach the homily in Spanish. Following Mass, at 1 p.m., the bishops will bless and lit up the torches of the faithful who will then make their ways to the different participating parishes throughout Brooklyn and Queens. The pilgrims will carry the torches back to their parishes as they sign, pray and spread messages of hope and love.

DeSales Media Group, the communications and technology arm of the Diocese of Brooklyn, will welcome Pope Francis to the New York metropolitan area with a 225-foot tall billboard in the middle of the Big Apple.

Earlier this week, from sunrise to sunset, a team started hand painting a welcoming message at one of New York’s busiest intersections, the corner of Eighth Avenue and 34th Street in Manhattan. The corner is conveniently located outside Pennsylvania Station and the iconic Madison Square Garden arena, which will host the Holy Father’s September 25th Mass. The billboard will generate more than 700,000 impressions each week and will be visible throughout September.

On Saturday, June 27, 2015, at 11 a.m., the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, will ordain ten men to the priesthood for the Diocese of Brooklyn at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph, 856 Pacific Street, Prospect Heights.
