Board Mentor for Academies ~ Office of the Superintendent

Position Summary:

The Board Mentor for Academies will be responsible to actively implement and monitor the functioning of the two tier governance model in the academies throughout the Diocese of Brooklyn with an emphasis on the formation of the board of directors that will facilitate the utilization of the directors’ unique talents, abilities and skills. The Board Mentor is not only a presence to the board of directors but through the participation agreement with the Office of the Superintendent ~ Catholic School Support Services ensures that the board of directors has the necessary resources to be successful in the development and implementation of a strategic plan that will lead to vitality and viability.  The Board Mentor ensures that the directors follow the appropriate diocesan procedures and norms as specified in the Academy Governance Manual.

Essential Functions:

  • Works to ensure that the board of directors fully utilizes the current resources that are available to them to be successful in their governance responsibility
  • Creates and provides resources to further enhance the working relationships among the board of directors, the members of the academy, the principal and the parent community
  • Ensures that the two tier governance model is fully implemented through onsite assistance and recommendations
  • Participates in their entirety in the monthly meetings of the board of directors
  • Provides oral and written feedback to the board of directors and the members regarding the agenda, minutes of the meetings, the outcomes of the meetings and the challenges
  • Utilizes the Board Assessment Process to develop and implement a plan of professional development that will address the needs of the board of directors
  • Follows-up with the board chairperson on key issues and provides recommendations that will further lead the academy to viability and vitality
  • Works to further develop the roles of the board secretaries, board treasurers and the members of the various sub committees
  • Assists with the development and implementation of the strategic plan of the academy working with the Deputy Superintendent for Governance, Leadership and Planning, the board of directors and the principal
  • Ensures that the elements of the Directors Manual are fully understood and implemented
  • Coordinates with the staff of the Office of the Superintendent ~ Catholic School Support Services the necessary services that the board of directors, academy principal and academy should be receiving
  • Collaborates with other diocesan agencies to ensure that all services are coordinated to assist the academy

Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience in Board Governance and Board Development
  • A practicing Roman Catholic in unity with the doctrine, teachings and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church
  • In-depth knowledge of the Roman Catholic Church, its tenets, structure, beliefs and attitudes
  • Demonstrated awareness of key national and Catholic Church documents related to governance models and their effectiveness
  • Creative problem solving and collaboration skills in addition to strong interpersonal, analytical, writing, public speaking, computer and organizational skills
  • Proven ability to design and present talks, presentations, and educational and skills training programs
  • Strong organizational and managerial skills
  • Excellent written, verbal and communication skills
  • Computer proficient and working knowledge of various Microsoft Office programs including Internet Research
  • Accessibility and ability to travel within and outside the geographic region of the Diocese of Brooklyn
