Brooklyn, N.Y., Sept. 6, 2011 – Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will celebrate the diocesan Mass of Remembrance at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Cathedral Basilica, Jay St. and Cathedral Place, Downtown Brooklyn, for families of 9/11 victims.

“Since that terrible day, we have been united in prayer for an end to all terrorism, extremism of any kind and violence throughout the world,” he said. “This Sept. 11th will provide a unique occasion for the entire Church to pray for the repose of all those who died, both on that terrible day and in the ensuing years through illness contracted from exposure to Ground Zero. We must redouble our prayers for a just and lasting peace throughout the world.”

Bishop DiMarzio has asked all parishes in Brooklyn and Queens to extend a personal invitation to families that may have lost loved ones on 9/11 and each parish will send two representatives “as a visible sign of our unity in faith.” Following Mass, there will be fellowship in the Cathedral Pavilion.

He will also serve as main celebrant at a 3 p.m. Mass at St. Peter’s Church, 22 Barclay Street, for the Police Benevolent Association (P.B.A.) of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and family members of the 38 P.B.A. members lost on 9/11.
