Pope Benedict XVI Elevates Brooklyn Church To Minor Basilica

Regina Pacis Named Third Basilica in Diocese of Brooklyn, Only 74 in U.S.

 This morning, the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, was informed by Pope Benedict XVI of the decision to designate Regina Pacis Church, 1230 65th Street, Brooklyn, a minor basilica.

Last year, Bishop DiMarzio submitted a petition to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments of the Vatican, requesting the honor of minor basilica for Regina Pacis. The request also required approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Read more »

Status of Catholic Schools in Howard Beach & The Rockaways

Over the course of the past three weeks since Hurricane Sandy, the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Superintendent of Schools office has worked diligently with Local, State and Federal officials to facilitate the reopening of Catholic schools in Howard Beach and the Rockaways. This included securing generators for the sites, assessing the extent of the damage to electrical and heating systems, determining necessary repair time, and taking precautions that included air quality testing.

Two Priests to be Ordained Auxiliary Bishops for the Diocese of Brooklyn

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio will ordain two bishops for the Church in Brooklyn and Queens today at 2 p.m. at a Mass of Episcopal Ordination to be celebrated at Our Lady of Angels R.C. Church, 7320 4th Avenue, Brooklyn. Pope Benedict XVI appointed the two priests – Msgr. Raymond Chappetto, 66, and Msgr. Paul Sanchez, 65 – as auxiliary bishops for Brooklyn. Read more »

Diocese of Brooklyn to Observe Fortnight for Freedom

DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN TO OBSERVE FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM; BEGINS NON-PARTISAN VOTER REGISTRATION CAMPAIGN

The Diocese of Brooklyn joins with Catholics throughout the United States to observe the
Fortnight for Freedom. This call by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for a 14-day
period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom begins June 21st
and ends July 4th.

Statement Regarding Msgr. Thomas Brady

The Diocese of Brooklyn was recently informed that the grand jury reviewing the complaints against Monsignor Thomas Brady has decided not to pursue a criminal indictment against him. In light of this, and following the directions of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome, Monsignor Brady has been removed from administrative leave. Taking into consideration his diminishing health, however, he remains restricted from public ministry.
