Statement on the Safety of the Children

The Gavin Group, Inc., a Boston-based independent firm headed by William A. Gavin, a retired FBI official, reported that the Diocese of Brooklyn continues to be in full compliance with the requirements of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The most recent audit covered the period from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010. The results are based on an exhaustive review of policies, documents, and interviews with Diocesan officials, parish and community members.

Investigation Into Alleged Violation Of Child Pornography Laws

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has announced that Monsignor Michael Dempsey was placed on administrative leave. The Diocese of Brooklyn was recently informed by Monsignor Dempsey that federal law enforcement is investigating him for the violation of internet child pornography laws which he does not deny. Allow me to share with you that no information presented in the investigation involved any members of this parish.

The Diocese of Brooklyn takes seriously its responsibility for the safety and security of young people in our care.  We are confident that few if any non-profit, community or governmental agencies go to the same great lengths as our institutions to protect children from abusers.  Nevertheless, we must always be vigilant to discover what more can be done to protect our children.
