MARCH AND MASS TODAY AT BROOKLYN’S CO-CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOSEPH
TO HONOR FIREFIGHTERS KILLED ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001

Today a solemn march and Mass will pay tribute to FDNY firefighters and all those who lost their lives in the September 11 terror attacks 17 years ago.

Beginning at 10:00 a.m., firefighters from across the country will join New York City’s bravest and families of the fallen at ground zero in lower Manhattan. From there, the group will march 23 FDNY ceremonial flags in single file across the Brooklyn Bridge. Each flag will represent one of 23 firefighters from Battalion 57 in Brooklyn killed in the line of duty at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The journey from ground zero to Brooklyn serves to symbolically bring the brothers back home. The procession will also include an FDNY ceremonial flag for every New York City Firefighter killed on 9/11 and an American flag, in remembrance of all who died that day.

Led by fire trucks and motorcycles, the procession will march past several firehouses and continue to the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph, located at 856 Pacific Street in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. The procession is expected to arrive at around
11:45 a.m. The FDNY Mass in honor of the fallen heroes will be celebrated at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph at 12:00 p.m. by Reverend Monsignor Kieran Harrington.

Reporters interested in covering the Mass should contact Adriana Rodriguez at (516) 238-7565.

DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN RESPONDS TO NEW YORK STATE
ATTORNEY GENERAL’S SUBPOENA AND INVESTIGATION

The Diocese of Brooklyn has received the subpoena sent by the New York State Attorney General and we are in the process of reviewing it. We have been collaborating closely with law enforcement for many years and stand ready to work with her office on this investigation.

In 2002, the Diocese of Brooklyn handed over all allegations of sexual abuse of a minor by a priest or deacon, to the district attorneys in Brooklyn and Queens. Since that time, we have adopted a zero tolerance policy and have reported any and all allegations of sexual abuse to law enforcement.

DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN TO ORDAIN FIVE MEN TO THE PRIESTHOOD

On Saturday, June 30, at 11 a.m., the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, will ordain five men to the priesthood for the Diocese of Brooklyn. The ordination Mass will take place at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph, 856 Pacific Street in Prospect Heights.

The new priests come from all over the world and will add to the diverse tapestry of the diocese. Two were born in New York to immigrant parents. The others were born in Haiti, Vietnam, and Germany. They range in age from 28 to 41.

The men have varied and rich life experience, which helped them in discerning God’s call to serve the Church. One survived cancer, while another lost his sister in the 2010 Haiti earthquake. One speaks four languages. And all are highly educated, with degrees in Theology, Philosophy, Business, and Political Science.

“As these seminarians journey to their day of Ordination, one can sense the joy that they experience as well as the joy of the Diocese and the Presbyterate that welcome these newly ordained into our ranks,” said Bishop DiMarzio.

The Diocese of Brooklyn, the eighth largest diocese in the United States and the only entirely urban diocese in the Nation, serves the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. The combined population of the boroughs stands at 4.9 million residents, of which more than 1.5 million identify themselves as Catholics.

For photos and full bios, please visit this week’s Tablet.

The Ordination Mass will be broadcast LIVE on NET TV at 11 a.m. EST., and will also be streamed live on www.netny.tv.

Keating, Esq., Chief Executive Officer, Catholic Migration Services, and other faith-based leaders will speak out against the human rights violations at our southern border, while hosting an immigration services forum in Corona today, June 19, at 12:30 p.m.

Fr. Patrick J. Keating, Esq., Chief Executive Officer, Catholic Migration Services said, “It is inhumane to rip children from their parents’ arms; to punish innocent children, just to deter immigration.  We have all seen the images and heard the audio of poor, defenseless children crying for their parents.  There has to be a more just way of dealing with the current immigration crisis. The administration has the authority to stop this immediately so that vulnerable children do not suffer any more psychological trauma.  Surely, all people of good will can agree, that separating innocent children from their parents is not the answer.”

The forum is designed to inform immigrant and community members of the resources available to their families.
