The earthquake in Haiti has given us much cause to think and pray for the victims of this tragedy in Haiti and for those who suffer because of the loss of their relatives and friends. Perhaps, it also leads us to wonder why earthquakes occur. From a scientific view, seismologists can tell us how and why they happen. That is not a satisfactory answer because, somehow, we view natural disasters as part of the problem of evil that humankind has struggled to understand since its very beginning. Read more »

Eight Brooklyn Priests Are Recognized for Their Service to the Catholic Church

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Ph.D., D.D., Bishop of Brooklyn, announced that His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, conferred the honor of Chaplains to His Holiness to seven priests of the Diocese of Brooklyn, an honor which carries the title of Reverend Monsignor and entitles them to wear a black cassock with fuchsia piping and buttons along with a fuchsia sash. On Tuesday, June, 16, 2009 the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio will undergo cardiac surgery. He will undergo the procedure at a local Catholic Hospital.

Three weeks ago, in the midst of his daily exercise regime, the Bishop noticed a significantly elevated heart rate. His physician initially prescribed an out patient procedure. Upon closer examination, it was determined that bypass surgery was necessary correct the blockage. Read more »

As president of each parish corporation, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio has asked that a diocesan wide strategic planning process, that would ensure the long term stability of Catholic schools in the diocese, be undertaken. The Diocesan Reconfiguration Committee (DRC) submitted its twenty-nine (29) regional proposals to ensure the long term vitality and strength of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn. Thanks to the generosity of the Tri State Italian American Congress, 50 students from the Catholic Elementary Schools and Catholic High Schools received a scholarship of $500 to be applied to this year’s tuition. Read more »

The Diocesan Reconfiguration Committee expects to release all its draft regional proposals to the appropriate constituents by January 11, 2009. A broad based consultation on the various proposals will be conducted immediately in every region of the Diocese following the release of the proposals. The consultation will conclude on Friday, February 12, 2009.
