Diocese of Brooklyn Announces Annual Mass of Hope and Healing

The Diocese of Brooklyn will celebrate the annual Mass of Hope & Healing on Tuesday, April 30, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Athanasius Roman Catholic Church, located at 2154 61^st Street in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn.  Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will be the main celebrant of the Mass, and Father Jeffry T. Dillon will deliver the homily.

The Mass of Hope & Healing, now in its fifth year, is planned by survivors for survivors, those who love a Victim-Survivor and all those impacted by the sexual abuse crisis. This year for the first time, the Diocesan Survivors Advisory Committee will light the Easter Candle and pray for the victims of abuse who have entered eternal life this past year.

“Certainly, due to the heightened media attention around the sexual abuse crisis facing the Catholic Church, I believe this year’s Mass will be very important and significant for all those who participate. As we continue to learn even more about the abuse crisis, it becomes even more disturbing.  May we continue to pray for all those affected by the horror that is sexual abuse” said The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn.

“The Mass of Hope and Healing was instituted because there was a need for something more, to let the survivors and victims know that the Church cares and is here for them. Each year, the members of the Diocesan Survivors Advisory Committee commit themselves to plan the specific details of this Mass, to make this a very special experience that is sensitive to survivors and that also speaks to survivors,” said Jasmine Salazar, the Vice-Chancellor and Victim Assistance Coordinator for the Diocese of Brooklyn.

All are invited to join together to pray for the healing of all those impacted by sexual abuse. The confidentiality of all in attendance will be strictly respected.

Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio to Celebrate Holy Thursday Mass

at the Cathedral-Basilica of St. James

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, will celebrate Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper tomorrow, Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral Basilica of St. James, 250 Cathedral Place in Downtown Brooklyn.

Holy Thursday Mass commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist and includes the Washing of the Feet. Bishop DiMarzio will wash the feet of 12 Diocese of Brooklyn parishioners, imitating Jesus washing the feet of the 12 Apostles at the Last Supper.

THOUSANDS OF CATHOLICS IN BROOKLYN AND QUEENS TO TAKE PART IN

NUMEROUS PROCESSIONS TO MARK GOOD FRIDAY

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, will take part in the Good Friday “Way of the Cross Over the Brooklyn Bridge,” Prayer and Procession beginning at
10 a.m. tomorrow, April 19, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. James, 250 Cathedral Place in Downtown Brooklyn.

Bishop DiMarzio will offer a reflection at the first Station of the Cross at St. James. He will then lead the group to the Brooklyn Bridge. The faithful will then process over the Brooklyn Bridge to Ground Zero, symbolically walking the path of Jesus toward His Crucifixion. Along the way, the marchers will stop and pray the Stations of the Cross. The apostolic group Communion and Liberation is sponsoring the prayer and procession.

At 3:00 p.m. Bishop DiMarzio will be in Ridgewood, Queens, to preside over the Solemn Liturgy of the Passion and Death of Our Lord in English at Our Lady of The Miraculous Medal located at 62-81 60^th Place. At 6:15 p.m. the Bishop will lead an Italian procession in the streets of Ridgewood, beginning at the parish hall on Bleecker street. At 8 p.m. the procession will return to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church for the Liturgy of the Word and Veneration of the Cross in Italian.

Other large processions marking the day Jesus died on the Cross will take place across the diocese in Brooklyn and Queens including:

2 p.m. in Corona, Queens

Thousands of Catholics will take part in a Procession and Good Friday Liturgy beginning at Our Lady of Sorrows, 104-11 37^th Avenue.

7:30 p.m. in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn

Thousands of Catholics will take part in the Way of the Cross Procession through the streets. The faithful will carry crosses and statues, symbolizing Jesus’ walk to his Crucifixion. Along the journey, participants will pray in Italian.

The procession begins on 66^th Street between 18^th and 19^th Avenues. The walk will end at Our Lady of Guadalupe, located at 15th Avenue and 72^nd Street.

Today, Holy Saturday, the Church commemorates the time Jesus spent in the tomb. Then, after sunset, Easter Vigil Services throughout Brooklyn and Queens will celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Services will begin in the dark and dramatically light up to symbolize the Risen Lord.

This year, the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, will celebrate the Easter Vigil at 8 p.m. at St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, located at 140-10 34th Avenue in Flushing, Queens. During the Mass, 56 people will receive the Sacraments of Initiation; 51 will receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Communion; two will receive Confirmation and Communion and three children will be baptized.

On Easter Sunday, April 21, churches throughout Brooklyn and Queens will continue to celebrate the Resurrection. Bishop DiMarzio will be the principal celebrant at Easter Sunday Mass at Noon at the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph located at 856 Pacific Street in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.
