STATUE HONORING MOTHER CABRINI PART OF THE COLUMBUS DAY FLOAT SPONSORED BY THE DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN

 

The Diocese of Brooklyn featured a Mother Cabrini statue aboard their float today at the 2019 New York City Columbus Day Parade in Manhattan.

 

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn rode on the float, boarding in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

 

Mother Cabrini recently received the most nominations in the “She Built NYC” competition, which aims to build more statues honoring women. But despite earning this top ranking, a public statue honoring her life was not chosen as part of the City’s current plans.

 

Today, Governor Cuomo announced his support for a new memorial to honor Mother Cabrini; a State Commission that will work with the Columbus Citizens Foundation, the Diocese of Brooklyn and others to site and fund the new statue.

 

“I welcome the assistance the Governor is promising in erecting a statue for Mother Cabrini, which we hope is a monument to her for her work on behalf of immigrants. We will work with Governor Cuomo’s office to make it happen,” said Bishop DiMarzio.

STATUE HONORING MOTHER CABRINI TO BE PART OF THE COLUMBUS DAY FLOAT SPONSORED BY THE DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN

 

The Diocese of Brooklyn today announced that it will be featuring a Mother Cabrini statue aboard their float which will be part of the 2019 New York City Columbus Day Parade, on Monday, October 14, 2019, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

 

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn will get on the float upon its arrival in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral (5^th Avenue between East 49^th and 50^th Streets) at approximately 1:00 p.m.

 

Mother Cabrini recently received the most votes in the “She Built NYC” competition, which aims to build more statues honoring women. But despite earning this top ranking, a public statue honoring her life is not part of the City’s current plans.

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio Assigned to Conduct Fact-Finding Mission of Buffalo Diocese

 

Attached, you will find a Communique from the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, D.C., authorizing an Apostolic Visitation for the Diocese of Buffalo by The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn.

 

Bishop DiMarzio released the following statement in response: “This is a difficult period in the life of the Church in Buffalo. I pledge I will keep an open mind throughout the process and do my best to learn the facts and gain a thorough understanding of the situation in order to fulfill the mandate of this Apostolic Visitation.

 

Our Holy Father has a great devotion to Our Lady Untier of Knots – I beg the intercession of the Blessed Mother, that I may be an instrument for surfacing the truth so that justice might be served and God’s mercy experienced.

 

Upon completion of the visitation, I will submit a report to the Congregation of Bishops at the Vatican.”

 

Neither Bishop DiMarzio nor his spokeswoman will be making any further comments on this matter.

BROOKLYN DIOCESE KEEPS HOPE ALIVE FOR MOTHER CABRINI STATUE

Bishop DiMarzio Begins Fundraising to Honor St. Frances Cabrini’s Legacy

 

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, and the Italian Apostolate of the Diocese of Brooklyn, today announced plans to host a procession and Mass this Sunday, October 6, 2019, and the start of a fundraising campaign, in support of the construction of a public statue recognizing Mother Cabrini.

 

Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will lead the procession from Mother Cabrini Park, located at 41 President Street in the Carroll Gardens section of Brooklyn, starting at 3 PM.  The park is located at the former site of a church building where Mother Cabrini first ministered to the poor immigrants of the Italian community. The procession will continue to Sacred Hearts – St. Stephen Church located at 125 Summit Street, where Mass will begin at 4 PM.

 

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, the Patron Saint of Immigrants, arrived in New York in 1889 with the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Mother Cabrini recently received the most votes in the “She Built NYC” competition, which aims to build more statues honoring women. But despite earning this top ranking, a public statue honoring her life is not being planned.

 

“Mother Frances Cabrini was certainly one of the women who built New York City. Her work to establish orphanages, schools, and a hospital, along with her commitment to immigrants, absolutely should be recognized. The failure to honor Mother Cabrini with a public statue would be an affront to many New Yorkers, especially Italian-Americans, who see her as most deserving,” said the Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn.

 

The Cabrini Statue fundraising campaign, through the Catholic Foundation for Brooklyn and Queens, is raising funds to have a statue of St. Frances Cabrini built. The Diocese is working with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams to have Mother Cabrini included in the She Built NYC program, with a preference for a statue to be constructed in front of Brooklyn Borough Hall.  Individuals looking to donate may visit https://catholicfoundationbq.org/cabrinistatue/
