Bishop Rene A. Valero, Retired Auxiliary

The youngest of three sons of Venezuelan parents — Caesar and the late Maria (Cordova) Valero, both born in Caracas — he has also influenced the development of Hispanic ministry in the Diocese since the mid-1970s.

Born in the West Harlem section of Manhattan on Aug. 15, 1930, he attended St. Joseph’s School there and Sacred Heart Mission House, Girard, Pa., before beginning seminary training at Cathedral College, Brooklyn. Read more »

Father Canon Thomas Machalski Appointed Chancellor And Rector

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Father Canon Thomas C. Machalski, Jr., pastor of St. Josaphat’s parish, Bayside, and adjutant judicial vicar on the Diocesan Tribunal, has been appointed Chancellor and Rector of SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, St. Mary’s Preparatory, and the Orchard Lake Polish Mission, by His Excellency Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit, effective July 1, 2011.

Sacrament of Confession Promoted

VIDEO CONTEST PROMOTES SACRAMENT OF CONFESSION

In an innovative campaign, the Metro New York and Long Island Catholic dioceses have turned to young people to help spread the word about the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Archdiocese of New York, the Diocese of Brooklyn, and the Diocese of Rockville Centre have offered students an opportunity to create and submit short (up to 1 minute in length) YouTube style videos to promote the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The contest, which is open to students in any accredited institution of learning from across the country, carries a top prize of $25,000 for the winner, with an additional $25,000 going to the student’s school or parish. A second prize of $10,000 and multiple third place prizes of $1,000 will also be awarded. Read more »

Bishop DiMarzio Addresses Abortion

The great strength of our city is our diversity. We are different colors from many different ethnic and religious traditions. I stand here this afternoon appalled by the vital statistics in our City which seem to suggest that so many of our young mothers are opting to terminate the lives of unborn children. As the leaders of faith based communities in our City we must redouble our efforts to ensure that young mothers have the support systems necessary to cope with potential alienation from family and loved ones as well as continue to meet the demands of education and/or work.

Diocese Of Brooklyn Implements First Phase Of Parish Reconfigurations
