Statement From The Superintendent Of Schools (Schools In Howard Beach And The Rockaways)

Over the course of the past three weeks since Hurricane Sandy, the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Superintendent of Schools office has worked diligently with Local, State and Federal officials to facilitate the reopening of Catholic schools in Howard Beach and the Rockaways. This included securing generators for the sites, assessing the extent of the damage to electrical and heating systems, determining necessary repair time, and taking precautions that included air quality testing.

Today is the feast day of St. Vincent DePaul, considered by many to be the “star” saint of
Christian charity and concern for the poor. Many people, including those who don’t know that
much about this great saint from the 17th century, know of the work of the Saint Vincent de Paul
Society, which is active in so many parishes and dioceses around the world bringing direct help
to people in need.

DIOCESE VESPERS FOR THE OPENING OF THE YEAR OF FAITH

A recent article in The New Yorker entitled “The Crisis Manager” and written by Gay Talese, profiles Joe Girardi, manager of the Yankees. As you may know, the Yankees recently ended the regular season in first place in the American League East and are currently in the race for the post-season run against the Baltimore Orioles in the Division Series. One interesting fact brought out in this article, however, is, “Although Girardi was brought up Catholic, he told me, ‘The Catholic church, it seemed to me, growing up, was a lot of rules. You sit, you stand, you kneel; you sit, you stand, you kneel.’ He said ‘Kim (his wife – Kim Innocenzi Girardi) introduced me to Jesus.’ He once described the moment to a reporter; ‘We were sitting in the basement of the Phi Delta sorority house. Kim explained salvation to me, and I silently prayed to receive Jesus as my Savior.'”   Read More….

TWO PRIESTS TO BE ORDAINED AUXILIARY BISHOPS FOR THE DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN

The Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio will ordain two bishops for the Church in Brooklyn and Queens today at 2 p.m. at a Mass of Episcopal Ordination to be celebrated at Our Lady of Angels R.C. Church, 7320 4th Avenue, Brooklyn. Pope Benedict XVI appointed the two priests – Msgr. Raymond Chappetto, 66, and Msgr. Paul Sanchez, 65 – as auxiliary bishops for Brooklyn. Read more »

Diocese of Brooklyn to Observe Fortnight for Freedom

DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN TO OBSERVE FORTNIGHT FOR FREEDOM; BEGINS NON-PARTISAN VOTER REGISTRATION CAMPAIGN

The Diocese of Brooklyn joins with Catholics throughout the United States to observe the
Fortnight for Freedom. This call by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for a 14-day
period of prayer, education and action in support of religious freedom begins June 21st
and ends July 4th.
