Most Reverend Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, regrets to inform you of the death of
Reverend Monsignor John J. Gildea, a retired priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn. Monsignor Gildea
was born on June 2, 1940, was ordained to the priesthood on May 28, 1966, and died Saturday
December 28, 2024.
Monsignor Gildea served the Diocese of Brooklyn as Parochial Vicar of the parishes of Saint
Bartholomew (Elmhurst), Saint Martin of Tours (Brooklyn), Saint Pius X (Rosedale), Blessed
Sacrament (Jackson Heights), Holy Name (Brooklyn), and Saint Matthew (Brooklyn).He also
served as Pastor of the parishes of Our Lady of Mercy (Brooklyn), Holy Family (Canarsie), Saint
Michael Archangel & Saint Edward the Confessor (Brooklyn), Sacred Heart (Brooklyn), Queen of
All Saints (Brooklyn), Saint Martin of Tours-Fourteen Holy Martyrs (Brooklyn), Holy Family 14
Street (Brooklyn), and Our Lady of Loreto (Brooklyn). Monsignor Gildea served in the Diocesan
Mission Apostolate in the Diocese of Paraguay and in the Diocese of La Vega Dominican
Republic.
Monsignor Gildea was a member of the Ecumenical and Interreligious Committee as well as a
member of the Seminary Admissions Board. He was named Chaplain of his Holiness in 2019.
