Becoming a part of the Catholic Church is a transformative journey that involves deepening your understanding and commitment to the faith. It’s distinct from other Christian traditions where one might simply declare their belief to become a member. Catholicism invites you into a rich, structured process of spiritual and communal growth known as the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).
What Is OCIA?
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults is the Church’s way of forming new disciples of Jesus Christ. It’s a gradual process that respects your personal journey while inviting you into a deeper relationship with Jesus and His Church. Through OCIA, you’ll explore the teachings of the Church, experience the Christian community, and learn to live as a follower of Jesus Christ.
The Journey Through OCIA
OCIA consists of several stages, each designed to meet you where you are and guide you to a fuller understanding and practice of the Catholic Faith. Here’s what you can expect:
1. Inquiry: The initial period where you’re introduced to Jesus, His teachings, and the Catholic Church. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and express any doubts or concerns.
2. Catechumenate: A time for deeper formation in the Catholic faith, including Scripture, Tradition, and Church teachings. You’ll attend regular classes, participate in community prayer and Mass, and start to live out the faith in your daily life.
3. Purification and Enlightenment: Coinciding with Lent, this stage leads to your initiation. It’s a time of reflection, intense prayer, and preparation for receiving the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
4. Mystagogy: Following your initiation, this period allows you to reflect on the experience of the sacraments and start living fully as a Catholic Christian, integrating into the life and mission of the Church.
Your Next Step
If you feel called to explore the Catholic faith, your first step is getting connected with a local parish. There, you’ll find community members and clergy ready to welcome you and guide you through the OCIA process. Each journey is unique, and the Church is here to support you at every step.
