DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN OPENS BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH A SPECIAL MASS OF THANKSGIVING

For Immediate Release: February 2, 2026

Bishop Robert Brennan, Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, which includes Queens, welcomed Bishop Anthony Narh Asare, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Accra, Ghana, as the principal celebrant and homilist for a Black History Month Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

Auxiliary Bishop Anthony Narh Asare was appointed an auxiliary bishop by the late Pope Francis on February 14, 2023. He is active in evangelization through the media, specifically Radio Angelus, an online platform in Ghana.

In his remarks at the reception following the Mass, Bishop Brennan acknowledged our nation’s 100th Anniversary of the recognition of Black history. Founded in 1926 as Negro History Week by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, he sought to broaden America’s understanding of Black history and ensure its inclusion in school curriculum, public libraries and local churches.

The Mass, hosted by the Diocese of Brooklyn and its Vicariate Office of Black Catholic Concerns, celebrated Black history, heritage, shared faith, diversity and the contributions of the Black community.

Music was provided by the music ministry ensemble drawn from various parishes, and members of the Guinean Apostolate. The Mass was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church, located in the South Ozone Park section of Queens.
