52 Prayers - Every Catholic Should Know

The Hail Mary

As we reflect on the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, we consider the amazing role Mary played in the history of salvation, the grace she had received for her role, and what it means to have her as spiritual mother of all Christians.

The Hail Mary is an ancient prayer dating back to the 6th century. The Hail Mary comes in two sections. The first half comes from the Angel Gabriel’s words to her in the Gospel of Luke, the second half is asking her to advocate for us as she did for the bride and groom at the Wedding at Cana.

Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.
