Bishop Brennan Kicks Off Catholic Schools Week: “Helping Our Young People to See Who God Created Them to Be”

For Immediate Release: January 26, 2025

Bishop Robert Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, this morning celebrated Mass to mark the start of Catholic Schools Week in the Diocese of Brooklyn at St. Ephrem Roman Catholic Church in the Dyker Heights section of Brooklyn. Students and faculty from St. Ephrem Catholic Academy were on hand and took part in the Mass.

“The joy of the Gospel, the splendor of truth, tied into all those tools we need in education, all those tools we need to live good lives, informed lives, educated lives. Our schools are about helping our young people to see who God created them to be and then to develop those gifts and talents that God gives to them,” said Bishop Brennan in his homily.

Following the Mass, students led Bishop Brennan on a “Winter Wonderland” tour of the academy during the open house. Bishop Brennan got a chance to meet the teachers, visit the classrooms, and review the art and literary work on display. Bishop Brennan also had the chance to visit the hydroponics lab. Hydroponics is a method that uses a nutrient-rich water solution to grow plants.

Catholic Schools Week, sponsored by the National Catholic Educational Association, started today and continues through Saturday, February 1. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community.” Since 1974, the NCEA has organized this celebration of Catholic education in the United States.
