Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, will celebrate a Memorial Mass of Remembrance for the Victims of the Haitian earthquake at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn on Friday February 12, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. The Most Reverend Guy Sansariq, Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn and the first Haitian born Bishop to be consecrated in the United States will preach the sermon.
The Basilica was chosen as a site in part because of it’s large seating capacity. Brooklyn and Queens are home to a large number of Haitian immigrants as well as first and second generation Haitian-Americans and many are expected to be in attendance Friday night. The Haitian community in the City of New York is thought to be close to 400,000 with the largest concentration living in Brooklyn and Queens.
“Many of our Haitian brothers and sisters are hurting. Some are grieving the loss of loved ones while others are still waiting for word from family and friends in Haiti. Hopefully this Memorial Mass, held one month after the devastating earthquake hit the island nation of Haiti, will be able to offer some measure of consolation to those who have lost so much” said Bishop DiMarzio.
