Official Statement Concerning Monsignor Michael Dempsey

In January 2010, Monsignor Michael Dempsey was placed on administrative leave (Can. 1722) by Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn, upon notification that Monsignor was being investigated by the Department of Homeland Security on suspicion that he had accessed child pornography on his personal computer. Upon the completion of that investigation, however, the federal government failed to charge Monsignor with having committed a crime. Upon review of the information provided by the Diocese of Brooklyn in this matter, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith determined that there was “no proof” that Monsignor Dempsey committed a canonical crime. Having taken into consideration the aforementioned facts, Bishop DiMarzio has decided to remove Monsignor Dempsey from administrative leave and restore him to the status of senior priest. The Bishop has granted him faculties to resume limited priestly ministry, which will be reviewed periodically and adjusted accordingly.
